Viddy's outburst - reading between the lines
ALL this;
- one of the best and most experienced defenders in Australian football - Angelo Costanzo - suddenly becoming surplus to requirements half-way through the club's most successful season, one built on a solid defence, which Costanzo was very much a part of,
- arguably the best holding midfielder of the first seven rounds of the season - Jonas Salley -suddenly lost without a trace,
- an aging club veteran in Mike Valkanis who hasn't been a part of things of late, mainly because he just isn't good enough any more, gets his odd chance and really struggles,
- the decision to suddenly release arguably the team's best player over the past two seasons - Diego Walsh - from his contract,
- the clamour from the likes of Ognenovski and Younis to seek out opportunities in Asia,
- players who were once first team regulars - the likes of Spagnuolo and Beltrame - no longer a part of things,
- a marquee player in Paul Agostino who is struggling for game-time makes little to no impression when he does get some game time,
- skipper Travis Dodd being left out of Pim's Verbeek's A-League selection,
- the clique that has apparently surfaced around the the Brazilians at the club,

incredible outburst
I see the herald this morning has mentioned pretty much all the names you did.
Reading Aloisi's comments, Beltrame might be the problem, but as you say there are obviously a few.
Wonder how they'll react against Qld Roar?
James
hi tony,
this is the most lucid commentary i have seen on this episode yet.
you are outdoing the pros.
clayton
Thanks Tony - great analysis
My small bit - The Jonas Salley story is that he was hired by Adelaide on the basis that he become a citizen and then play in the ACL. Then Adelaide missed the bit where the rules were changed by FIFA on naturalisation. So they left him out and kept him out to keep others warm. Lacking game time, he couldn't get back in. He was, at the time, reported to be really cheesed off that he had been forced to give up the citizenship of his birth for no payoff.
James
I think they will fire back at the Roar.
Adelaide still have a great team. And they will all be playing for their football future wherever that is.
Yeah.
It's already confirmed that the offloading of Costanzo, Diego and Salley had created some divisions in the squad. Also Cassio and Cristiano are threaten to leave the club (FOX sports).
I also believe that the likes of Spagnuolo and Beltrame are involved as well. They did say that players that this has been going on since season 1. Therefore the question mark are on all players who were there on the beginning (valkanis is excluded as he's offered coaching position and viddie has kept faith in him. Dodd excluded as he is the captain)
However I'm not too sure how Travis Dodd not getting picked in PIm Verbeek squad has anything to do with Adelaide's club division Tony.
thanks all for your comments...
James, if the meeting today had the effect of a real crisis meeting - like Perth Glory's earlier in the year when the message was "you're in or you're out" - then there is every hope they might be able to rebound, but it would be extraordinary to turn things around and regain the requisite self belief...esp with the way the roar are playing...
plenty to prove though, so should be a beaut, and they have the edge over queensland this season..
thanks for your kind words clayton, when I wrote it at lunchtime yday I was just attempting the convey what I'd read between the lines and heard in passing having observed adelaide's season with great fascination...some of it may be close to the mark, some less-so, but essentially they're my observations (or the bits that i've heard), and I cant but not get the impression that those that arent in the mix, when things arent going so smooth, start to bitch and soon their chatter gets some currency...it's happened at most clubs i've played at, and the reality is that footballers are footballers, whatever level they're playing...
john, interesting re jonas, it was a really pity the red-tape affected his acl chances, and thus his chances at the clubs (even though it unearthered a gem in barbiero)...i've said it a few times already, but i reckon salley was in career best form at the start of the season, and i remember being pleasantly surprised as i'd never really rated him...i'd also be guttered to be playing that well and then hardly see any minutes thereafter...
dasilva, thanks for your comment, as i wrote earlier in my repsonse to clayton, when I wrote this the morning after ther night before i was simply providing my take on what i'd observed from a distance, so not sure what impact (if any) Dodd's exclusion from the socceroos squad had, but i've written on a few occasions his ommission was perhaps the biggest surprise, and it couldn't have lead to a happy player...
Good readinng your post
